Amsterdam is still a family friendly destination if you stay away from the districts that are very liberal and open. Cruise the many canals by boat and soak up the history and wonderful architecture. Rent a bicycle (they seem more popular than cars) and cycle around the squares and streets. Check for good padding on the seat, as many of these streets are cobblestone!
The people are warm, friendly and very helpful and most of them speak English. The main square and its immediate surroundings, including restaurants and shops, is the most popular tourist area; however, to the south there lies some incredible museums that must be visited. The summer is the most ideal time to visit Amsterdam because of the great weather; the other seasons can be rainy or cold. Amsterdam is a great destination to have a rewarding vacation or can serve as a starting point to the rest of Europe.
