Fort de France is the business center and capital of the island Martinique, an overseas region of France located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is actually one of the major cities of the Caribbean. Fort de France lies on the island's west coast at the north entrance to the large Fort de France Bay, which lies at the mouth of the Madame River. Sitting on the end of the bay on a narrow plain, it is surrounded by verdant hills and the sea.
This chic, modern town features many tourist attractions most of which are conveniently grouped around the city's central park, Place de la Savane. ...

In fact, the city is laid out around the Place de la Savane that features fountains, tall picturesque palms, mango trees, playing fields, walks, benches, shops and cafés that line it, and near the harbour at the edge of the park, vendors stalls with homemade crafts. It is from this harbour that one can take the ferry to the opposite side of the bay to Pointe du Bout, which boasts excellent beaches. The ferry leaves every hour and it is a 15-minute ride from harbour to harbour.
Fort de France also offers golf at the one golf course, Les Trois-Islets. It also offers the opportunity for excellent hiking for which the Regional Nature Park will provide maps, advice and recommendations. Fort de France offers many attractions including Fort St. Louis, which guards the port as well as three other forts. The Cathedral St. Louis is an impressive iron building that houses a massive organ and fine stain glass windows. The Schoelcher Library is one of the most beautiful monuments in the city and is named after a local hero who fought for the abolition of slavery. The Jardin de Balata, is a botanical garden in a rainforest setting, thought by some to be the most beautiful botanical garden in the Caribbean. The Sacre-Coeur de Balata Church overlooks Fort de France and is a scaled down replica of the Sacre-Coeur Basilica in Paris.
Featuring a warm, vibrant, and diverse culture, tantalizing cuisine, fine, French-imported shopping, and a glorious climate, Fort de France is a delightful town to visit.
