Despite the increase in tourism, Mijas has retained its old world charm, with its delightful maze of narrow, cobbled streets and archways. The balconies of its quaint and charming red-tile roofed houses are ablaze with colourful flowers and the residents still enjoy the natural mineral water from the ancient spring at the entrance to the village. Visitors are thrilled with traditional donkey taxis that are available around the pueblo, and snap up the popular souvenirs of hand made linen and wicker items made by local artists and crafters. When dining, be sure to sample the delicious local dish called "gazpachuelo", an egg soup.
If you plan to visit Mijas in January, you will see the wonderful local spectacle in celebration of the feast of San Anton. The residents climb the mountain in carts and carriages piled high with food and flowers. In summer, you can travel a short 15 minutes by car to the coast and Mijas Costa, originally a small and charming fishing village. Now transformed into a popular beach resort, it offers restaurants, bars, swimming and water sports. Any time of the year is good for golfing at one of the many championship courses within easy distance. The famous courses of Valderrama, Torrequebrada, Alhaurin La Grande and Monte Mayor are within an easy driving distance.
