Newark sits approximately eight miles west of Manhattan, New York and is New Jersey's largest city. The ethnically diverse city affords visitors unique sights, sounds, and taste experiences. Those interested in architecture will find much to admire in Newark. The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, with its 232-foot tall towers, stained glass windows, and religious sculptures, is the fifth largest cathedral in the United States and is a fine example of French-gothic style. Pope John Paul II visited the Cathedral in 1995 when it was elevated to the status of Basilica. It is open year round and holds concerts throughout the year for the public to enjoy. The Newark Museum, built in the 1920s, contains art galleries, science galleries, a planetarium, a mini zoo, a gallery for children's exhibits, a fire museum, a sculptural garden, and an 18th century schoolhouse. It houses a fine American art collection and boasts one of the world's best Tibetan collections. John Ballantine built Ballantine House, now part of the Newark Museum, in the Dutch Renaissance style in 1885. It is open daily for tours and is one of the few Victorian houses in America where visitors can see embossed leather wall coverings.
Newark's rich cultural history has led to a thriving performing arts community. The African Globe Theater Works puts on productions by and about people of African descent. The Newark Boys Chorus School trains students for the Newark Boys Chorus which performs all over the world. The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, which performs at the Newark Symphony Hall, has been named one of America's top thirty orchestras.
Those visiting Newark should eat out at one or more of its many restaurants. For the adventurous palate, there is much to choose from including Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian, Greek cuisine as well as a good mix of African-American soul food.
Smaller museums, art galleries, and shops abound in Newark and it hosts many festivals throughout the year. Both the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Prudential Center list numerous upcoming theater productions and concerts. Sports enthusiasts can watch Newark's hometown baseball team, the Newark Bears, play at Bears Eagles Riverfront Stadium; shoot a round of golf at one of Newark's many golf courses; or enjoy some state of the art roller skating at Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Center.
