San Juan is a city composed of a variety of neighbourhoods. It features numerous hotels, museums, historic buildings, restaurants, casinos, beaches and shopping centers. Several notable historic buildings located in San Juan are two of the city's former defensive forts, Fort San Felipe de Morro and Fort San Christobal. Another historic site is La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas. Also representing significant history is Old San Juan, the historic colonial settlement section of San Juan and the oldest settlement in Puerto Rico. Blue cobblestone streets and flat roofed brick and stone buildings dating back to the 16th century characterize it. It also features many restaurants and art galleries.
Two very popular tourist destinations are Ocean Park, an upscale beachfront community dotted with small bed and breakfasts. It features a wide oceanfront and offshore reefs that prevent the Atlantic Ocean waves from reaching the beach. This is a trendy beach destination and is popular for windsurfing and kite surfing. Condado is an oceanfront, tree lined community at which the north section features the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. It has many hotels, nightclubs, casinos, shops and restaurants. It is a key tourist destination.
For those wishing to explore beyond the boundaries of the city, a visit to the El Yunque Rain Forest is a must. This spectacular preserve features over 240 species of trees, hundreds of mini orchids, and what was once believed to be the Fountain of Youth. With all the amenities and attractions of a vibrant city to the charm of a colonial settlement to the beauty of sandswept beaches, San Juan has something for even the most discerning traveller.
