In addition to the beach, Varadero has a multitude of natural attractions including caves, a chain of easily accessible cays and escarpments. Varadero is located on a peninsula at the northeastern end of which is the Hicacos Point International Park, an ecological preserve of natural forests and beaches. Hicacos Point features the 85-metre Cave of Ambrosia of which tours are offered. Also noteworthy is the "El Patriarca", a cactus that stands on the Hicacos Point that is thought to be 600 years old. Other attractions include the Mangon Lake that is home to 31 species of birds and 24 species of reptiles, as well as La Calavera or the skull and Salt Works ruins, one of Spains' first salt works in the New World.
