Hurricane Maria Travel Update #2

Toronto, ON - September 18, 2017

Sunwing continues to track Hurricane Maria. As earlier advised, flight services into Punta Cana and Puerto Plata have been suspended until September 22nd. After reviewing the most up-to-date projections of the hurricane’s path and strength, Sunwing has taken the decision to activate its contingency plans and repatriate all customers from Dominican Republic in advance of the storm’s projected landfall.


  • Customers scheduled to depart on the four Sunwing flights from Puerto Plata or Punta Cana on Tuesday, September 19th, will return to Canada as planned.
  • Customers scheduled to depart Punta Cana and return to Toronto on Wednesday, September 20th, will also return to Canada as planned.
  • Sunwing will be operating nine additional flights on Tuesday and Wednesday to repatriate all other customers ahead of the storm. Sunwing destination representatives will be in touch with all guests to con

Sunwing does not have any passengers in other destinations currently forecasted to be impacted, but continues to monitor the situation closely.

Hurricane Irma Travel Update

Toronto, ON - September 18, 2017

Sunwing would like to announce the following updates regarding future travel to Cuba and St Maarten/St Martin. Effective today, all Sunwing flights to Holguin, Manzanillo and Varadero have now resumed as per their normal schedule. Flights to Cayo Coco, Cayo Santa Maria and Camaguey will resume from Wednesday November 1st, 2017. All flights to St. Maarten/St Martin remain cancelled up until April 30th, 2018. Flexible policies remain in place for affected customers allowing them to rebook or change destination. They may also be eligible for a full refund either in cash or travel vouchers depending on their individual circumstances.

Sunwing continues to work closely with its hotel partners and destination teams to conduct ground assessments to determine when hotels damaged by the hurricane will be at an acceptable standard to welcome Sunwing guests. Here follows the latest updates per destination:

In addition please be aware that Hotel Tropicoco, Havana is now not expected to re-open in the immediate future.

In Cayo Coco, Cayo Santa Maria, and Camaguey, destination teams continue to conduct detailed evaluations on affected hotels. Until more information is collected, it remains too early to give an accurate assessment as to the reopening date of any specific hotel. Further updates are expected as the week progresses.

Customers scheduled to travel to any of these three destinations up to and including Tuesday October 31st, 2017 may book an alternate date* or destination*, or obtain a full refund in cash.

St Maarten/St Martin

All flights to St. Maarten/St Martin remain cancelled up until April 30th, 2018. To accommodate customers who were scheduled to travel to St. Maarten/St Martin, Sunwing has added extra flight services from Montreal to Cancun and from Toronto to Jamaica, and will be introducing more destinations over the coming days to offer customers additional alternatives.

*Where the price of the chosen alternate varies, customers will pay or be refunded the difference in price as appropriate.

Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco, Camaguey

Flights:

Scheduled flights are expected to resume on Wednesday November 01st, 2017.

Hotels:

Our destinations teams are in the process of conducting detailed evaluations, while our Product team is seeking updates directly from the hotels. Until we have more complete information, it remains too early to give an accurate assessment as to the reopening date of any specific hotel. We expect to be able to share preliminary information by early next week.

Interim Flexible Policy:

Customers scheduled to travel to any of these three destinations up to and including Tuesday October 31st, 2017 may book an alternate date* or destination*, or obtain a full refund in cash.


Holguin:

Flights:

Regular flight service will resume today, Friday September 15th, 2017, with the scheduled flights from both Toronto and Montreal.

Hotels:

All Sunwing hotels are open and operational with the exception of Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca which will reopen on Sunday September 17th, 2017 to accept new arrivals.

Interim Flexible Policy:

Customers booked to travel to Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca up to and including Saturday September 16th, 2017 may rebook to travel to an alternative resort*, change their travel date* or destination*, or obtain a full refund in cash. All Holguin customers scheduled to travel up to and including Thursday September 21st, 2017 that no longer wish to travel may rebook to an alternative date or destination, or obtain a full refund in cash. Regular policies are in effect for departures scheduled from Friday September 22nd, 2017 onwards.


Varadero:

Flights:

Regular flight service will resume from Monday September 18th 2017 onwards from Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa as per original flight schedule.

Hotels:

Based on information provided from our hotel partners and detailed on the ground assessments from our destination team, we are currently evaluating the dates on which each hotel will be able to service our customers to the necessary standards that we would expect.
Please note that hotels may be accepting guests from other operators or countries at an earlier date and this information applies only to Sunwing arrivals.
All Sunwing-featured Varadero hotels will be welcoming Sunwing guests from Monday September 18th 2017, with the exception of the following properties:

Travel Advisory: Hurricane Irma

In response to Hurricane Irma, Air Canada is operating a total of 24 additional flights to bring customers home early from the Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Samana), Florida (Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Orlando), Cuba (Varadero, Holguin, Havana and Cayo Coco), Antigua and Providenciales, as well as larger aircraft with more seats for flights from the region, including Havana and Nassau.

With these additional flights and larger aircraft, Air Canada will have flown over 6,000 seats northbound in addition to its regular schedule over the three-day period from Tuesday, September 5 to Thursday, September 7.

In addition, Air Canada has implemented a goodwill policy for customers whose itinerary includes a flight impacted by the path of the hurricane.

Hurricane Maria: Update September 19, 2017

Air Transat has launched an evacuation operation to get all its travellers out of the Dominican Republic by sending a total of 8 aircraft to Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and Samana. Three aircraft are expected to arrive in Puerto Plata and Samana in the evening today and five in Punta Cana tomorrow morning. The evacuation procedure applies regardless of the return date indicated on the Air Transat ticket.
This operation will allow close to 2 200 passengers to be repatriated.

Canceled flights and Hurricane Policy

Please note that scheduled flights on September 21 and 22 to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, departing from Toronto, Montreal and Quebec are canceled. Customers affected by these flight cancellations will all be contacted and may (i) travel at a later date; (ii) travel to another destination, subject to certain conditions; (iii) cancel with full refund (excluding travel insurance costs when purchased).
The company continues to closely monitor the development of Hurricane Maria.

Transat's hurricane policy has been implemented for flights still scheduled to depart until September 25, 2017 to Dominican Republic.



Hurricane Irma – Update September 12

Due to the impacts caused by the passage of Hurricane Irma, here are the changes to some of our destinations: Cuba

Our airline operations to Cayo Coco and Cayo Santa Maria will be suspended until October 31, 2017. Our operations to Holguin will continue as normal, with a flight scheduled as of this Friday, September 15, 2017. We expect to resume our operations to Varadero as of September 22, 2017.

Dominican Republic and Mexico

To meet the higher demand, we will be increasing the capacity on our flights to the Dominican Republic and Mexico during the months of September and October 2017.

We are currently coordinating all the changes to our bookings following the passage of hurricane Irma. Our teams will contact all customers impacted by those changes. We thank you in advance for your collaboration.

Hurricane Maria - Multiple cities/the Caribbean- A hurricane warning has been announced for:

- Bridgetown, Barbados - St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles - St. Lucia, Hewanorra - Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - Punta Cana, Dominican Republic - Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic - the Caribbean This may cause delays or cancellations.
