Pointe-a-Pitre is the biggest and main city of Guadeloupe, located in the center of the island, facing the Caribbean Sea and near the Riviere Salee, which is a channel of water that separates Grand Terre from Basse Terre, the two main islands. The Pointe-a-Pitre port is the main port of call for both passenger and cargo ships. The bay offers a sheltered port and an extensive pier runs the length of the waterfront. Most local sights are within walking distance from the pier and include Place de la Victoire, the town's central park, which is shaded by palm trees. Another attraction is the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul features arches made of iron girders, reflecting a history touched by hurricanes and earthquakes. The historical site of Fort Fleur D'Epee offers great panoramic views. The Guadeloupe Aquarium introduces visitors to a great variety of fish and features open turtle and shark aquariums. Most visitors drop into Pointe-a-Pitre to shop. There are many specialty shops where one can buy perfumes and other "Made-in-France" products. It is recommended that the best time to shop and visit the town is in the morning, especially when taking in the waterfront and outdoor market.
Although Pointe-a-Pitre does not exude the same charm found in other cities and towns in Guadeloupe, it is a town set in the middle of Caribbean paradise and Guadeloupian richness of culture and hospitality. It provides a wonderful port of entry to discover the wonders and beauty of the Guadeloupian islands.
